I've made three pairs of Free Range Slacks now, and I love each pair dearly! It has taken awhile to nail down my preferred sizing and construction, although all three fit & get worn often! View & Sizing:Admittedly, this is one of the wonkiest size discrepancies in any of my makes. In my toile (which has become my beloved purple pair) I made a size 0, based off my hip measurement. This is because the elastic for waistband can be cut to my actual waist size, as long as the pants can get over my hips. After making the size 0, my two most recent pairs were a size 00. ![]() The main reason I've found 00 to be the ideal size is that the finished garment measurements lead to very baggy pants, which just isn't my desired outcome.
After finding the orange pair to be just a *tad* too tight in the butt, I have finally landed on a size 00, no mods as my ideal size (the blue pair pictured below)! Materials:Version #1 = Purple Rayon/Linen Blend from Joann's Version #2 = Orange Linen Blend from Joann's Version #3 = Blue 100% Linen from LA Fashion District Considering all the topstitching in these makes, going forward I plan to use actual top-stitching thread for more detail. So far I've just used matching thread and it doesn't pop a ton. Construction:First off, the instructions by Sew House 7 are AMAZING and they have a detailed sewalong which is incredibly helpful. These were my first pairs of pants, and they took all the fear our of it (including helpful visuals on how to address various fit issues). On all three versions I omitted the back pockets, although I admire the cool way they integrate the back pocket seam into the side seam panel.
Final Thoughts:This pattern is my first real tried & true pattern! I LOVE the look of the tapered version, and hope to try the flared version some time soon. The elastic waistband is super customizable, and therefore fits me perfectly. The tapered pants are amazing summer and fall staples. I'm hoping to find a way to adapt them to winter, although I don't love the look of the tapered pants unfolded. I may try a tapered pair that I modify to look intentional unfolded. I highly recommend this pattern to anyone looking to venture into pants, its a great start & staple!

About FrancescaI got my first sewing machine middle school, circa 2005 (although I don't remember learning much in the way of sewing). After a long hiatus, I was reunited with my machine in 2019. I re-entered the hobby through gear-making, and have been crafting a handmade wardrobe since late 2020. I have a real affinity for comfy clothes (secret pajamas) and all the colors! Archives
