I've now made three Gilbert's, two for myself and one for my mother-in-law! Throughout this post I will refer to Version #1 as my first go, the red pictured above, and Version #2 is my second attempt, which included a small bust adjustment and is the fall pattern below. View & Sizing:I need to start by acknowledging that my first Gilbert, the red pictured above, involved so many careless mistakes that it's hard to distinguish where the fault lays (but I'm going to blame the jumbled mind of a very burned out teacher!).
In Version #2, pictured above, I performed a 0.5" small bust adjustment following the details on Helen's blog. I also decided to lengthen the top and ended up falling right between the lengths of views A and B (and I remembered to length the facing accordingly this time!).
Materials:Version #1 was made from a delightful (but perpetually wrinkly) cotton chambray from Salt Lake Sewciety. Version #2 was made from a rayon print I picked up in the LA Fashion District. Construction:Alrighty, I'll admit I was incredibly exhausted when I undertook Version #1, so I don't know how much is my fault and how much could be clarified in the instructions. But here's a not-at-all comprehensive list of all my screw-ups the first go around:
Final ThoughtsWhile I've already made three versions, I know I've got many more coming. I do wish Helen's Closet scaled the patterns better towards the smaller sizes. I find I need to make a lot of adjustments to get my size to fit. After the SBA and adjusting the length, I think I've got a pattern that fits great and I'll keep making. Plus, this is the first pattern my mother-in-law got excited about, so I finally got to gift her a garment!

About FrancescaI got my first sewing machine middle school, circa 2005 (although I don't remember learning much in the way of sewing). After a long hiatus, I was reunited with my machine in 2019. I re-entered the hobby through gear-making, and have been crafting a handmade wardrobe since late 2020. I have a real affinity for comfy clothes (secret pajamas) and all the colors! Archives
